2022 B18 Kalamazoo Finals

Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

Stat of the Week: 60%

After winning Kalamazoo last week, Learner Tien will be playing in the 2022 US Open. In the finals, he beat Ethan Quinn 7-6 7-6 5-7 6-3. Yes, it’s the best of 5 sets.

How did he do it?

He returned better than his opponents, especially on second serve. All against significant firepower: Cooper Williams (QF), Martin Damm (SF), and then Ethan Quinn in the finals.

Tien won 60% on return points vs second serves and consolidated by winning 54% of his own second serve points. He also converted almost 50% of all break points.

Point of the Week

Working on your return of serve, especially on second serves, is a great way to improve your game.

Despite being the most under-practiced shot in the game, it is one of the most important ones.

Generally, the returner can be more proactive against the second serve and should look for opportunities to be more aggressive. Moving into the net behind the return is a great option. The more you do it the better you become at it!
