2022 Grand Slam Review – Boys

Are Rallies on Clay Longer?
Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

For the month of November we will look at data from the 2022 Junior Grand Slams.  For this we have looked at a total of 71,249 points (Boys – 36,106, Girls – 35,143)

Are Rallies on Clay Longer?
On average, 3/4 of all points are over before any player hits a 4th stroke.  So, 3 shots or less per player.  This is especially true on the faster surfaces – hard and grass. On clay though, there is a notable difference at both ends of the rally length spectrum:

🎾 1st 2 Shots
On clay, considerably fewer points (7 – 8%) end after 2 shots, most notably due to the lessened impact of the Serve.  There are fewer aces and also fewer missed returns.

🎾 7+ Rallies
On the red clay of Roland Garros, 30% of all rallies were longer than 7 shots (4 strokes or more for one or both players)

🎾 Mid-length Rallies
Rallies between 3 and 6 shots are pretty much the same for all surfaces, averaging 46% (45% on clay).
2022 Grand Slam Review - Are Rallies on Clay Longer?

While rallies are generally less than 3 strokes for each player, we have never advocated that coaches and players work ONLY on short rallies. Confidence, movement, stroke production, and patterns of play are honed by extending rallies.  Especially on clay.

Our new TA Challenger service features integrated match reports where stats like rally lengths, are linked directly to video events.  This means that coaches and players can easily dissect a match, watch the video and then plan practices intelligently.
