Stat of the Week | ATP Serve “Halo” Effect

Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

Stat of the Week: 69%

We all know that the server generally has the upper hand in the point, with the ability to totally control three major variables on their first shot.

  1. Placement
  2. Pace
  3. Spin

And they get two chances to get the ball in play!

We looked at over 136,000 points from 2021-22 to see how long this advantage “lingered” in longer rallies. What we find is that in the shorter rally lengths, the server had a distinct advantage, winning 69%. After this, things changed!

Stroke Count 21-22 ATP

Overall though, the advantage is still to the server. They win 65% of all points…

Here is a more detailed look at the points won at different rally lengths:

Point of the Week

The “halo” effect of the serve lasts for only two additional shots. The returner’s odds rise significantly if they extend the rally beyond their 3rd shot (rally length of six or more).

Question: Knowing that the serve is more dominant on the men’s side than the women’s side, how would you expect the above results to differ for women? Check back next week to find out.
