Stat of the Week | June 17, 2020

Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

June is serving month!

Every Wednesday this month, we’ll be releasing new data on the serve.

Stat of the Week: 40%

A few weeks ago in our June 3rd Stat of the Week, we showed you the highest win percentage for 1st serves, by location.

Do the players serve to the best locations the majority of the time?

Women at the college level hit 40% of their first serves to the corners.

This shows how often each location is hit when the 1st serve goes in.

According to our June 3rd Stat, wide and T were the two best locations to hit 1st serves for the women.

This indicates that they are not hitting the T serve enough, or they’re simply missing it when they try it.

Here are the numbers for the men.

NCAA-Men 2019-20WideBodyT
1st Serve Deuce43%18%39%
1st Serve Ad46%17%37%

This shows how often each location is hit when the 1st serve goes in.

When you compare this with our June 3rd Stat, the men should be targeting the T serve on the deuce side at a slightly higher rate as it has the highest win percentage.

However, we don’t know if this win percentage would go down if it were targeted more frequently.
