Stat of the Week: 75%
Last week we took a look at some R16 to finals matches on the Men’s side. This week, we do the same on the women’s draw.
Every point ends in either a winner or an error. On the women’s side, for every winner, there are 3 errors (75%).
This is slightly higher than the men, where we see 1 winner for every 2 errors (67%).
Interesting facts:
- One in every ten 2nd serves is a double fault.
- Aces barely outnumber double faults (but account for 20% of all winners).
- One in every four (25%) 1st serve returns is an error.
- One in every five (20%) 2nd serve returns is an error.
- 11 return errors are hit for every return winner.
Point of the Week
Considering all possible shots in a rally in tennis (Serve, Return, Serve+1, Return+1, 5+), the greatest disparity between winners and errors happens on the return.
Especially on the return of 1st serve, the returner is “reactive” with the main intent of just getting the ball back in play. On the WTA tour, the returner is more “proactive” on the 2nd serve and generally has the advantage over the server.
