2022 Boys Grand Slams Review - Do Match Winners Serve Better? — Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

For the month of November we will look at data from the **2022 Junior Grand Slams**. For this we have looked at a total of 71,249 points (Boys – 36,106, Girls – 35,143)

Typically, we look at the numbers for 1st Serve and 2nd Serve separately. Obviously, it is the combined values that indicate the true strength of serve.

On average, the world’s best junior boys win 60% of all serve points.

Points won on serve is the strongest indicator to winning matches. But it is not just the strength of the actual serve that influences this metric. Equally important is the strength of the return. Because the majority of points are short, it is a combination of Serve and Return strength that contributes to point- and ultimately, match outcome.

Serve Points Won and Return Points Won have a symbiotic, converse relationship. If I win 60% of all my serves, the returner wins the remaining 40%. If I improve my stats by 5%, my opponent’s stats drop by the same amount. But the gap doubles. Good serving forces poor serving, and vice versa.

Unless it is a Point Penalty, every point starts with a Serve. And unless the serve is an Ace or a Double Fault, there is a Return. Knowing this, players should spend the appropriate amount of time on these strokes on the practice court.
