Stat of the Week | September 9, 2020

Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

Stat of the Week: 58%

As the famous saying goes, “a player is only as good as his second serve.”

Federer and Nadal win an astounding 58% of points on their 2nd serves. Djokovic is close behind at 56%. Many players don’t even win at this rate on their 1st serve!

Pace is not the key ingredient on this important shot, so these players rely primarily on placement and spin to establish their authority in the point. Also, their 2nd serve is aggressive, not just an attempt to get the ball in play.

Not to mention the players hitting the 3rd, 5th, etc. shots of the rally are the best… ever.

Do you know your own serve stats?

You need to know the percentage of points you win on both 1st and 2nd serves. If you don’t, you could be playing a losing game right from the start.
