Stat of the Week | 2022 Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic

Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

Stat of the Week: 13%

Novak Djokovic edged closer to GOAT status by winning his 21st major title last Sunday.

He did it not by overwhelming his opponents with firepower, but rather by making fewer errors. In fact, his last three opponents outgunned him in the winner column. But crucially, they made 13% more errors.

Novak makes his opponents uncomfortable. And it works.

2022 Wimbledon Djokovic QF to Finals

Rally Length Data

  • 77% of all rallies were over within SIX total strokes, that is a maximum of 3 shots for each player.
  • Djokovic won 54% of all points played.

Rally Lengths Djokovic Matches Wimbledon

1st Serve Data

  • Djokovic made 64% and won 83% (Wins 53 of every 100 points)
  • Opponents made 71% and Won 71% (Wins 50 of every 100 points)
  • So, despite fewer 1st Serves Made (-7%), the higher Win % (+12%) results in a more effective first serve.

Point of the Week

We know that our sport is a game of errors, rather than one of winners. From the quarter finals to finals, 60% of all points ended in an error by one of the players. And this was an exception to what we normally see.

At the highest levels of our game, it is usually closer to 66% – two errors to every winner.

Your focus should be more to generate opponent errors rather than rack up winners.
