2022 Grand Slam Review – Boys’ Return Data

Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

For the month of November we will look at data from the 2022 Junior Grand Slams.  For this we have looked at a total of 71,249 points (Boys – 36,106, Girls – 35,143)

At the 2022 Grand Slams, players were more likely to hit a backhand return than a forehand return.  In fact, backhand returns outnumbered forehands by 10%.

In the Deuce court the returner hits a similar number of Forehand to Backhand returns.  But on the Ad side, there are considerably more BH returns.

This is due to pure court geometry – it is easier to run around a BH return and hit a FH in the deuce court than it is from the Ad court.  In the Ad court, the returner will hit 3 backhand returns for every 2 forehands.

Overall, an equal percentage of return winners are hit from the FH vs BH side (just under 1%). And the same with errors (average 11.5%).  For every return winner, there are 16 return errors.

The numbers show that you are more likely to make an error on the return than hit a winner.  The primary focus then should be to get the return back in play.  Reduce errors and accept the occasional winner as a bonus.
Knowing your numbers helps.
