Stat of the Week: 65.6%
In singles, the WTA top 10 hover around 60% of first serves made. Of the current top 10, exactly half are above 60%, while the other half may need to work on that this offseason.
In doubles, that number goes up.
WTA doubles players make 65.6% of their first serves, on average. We reviewed data from over 4,000 points this year that included each of the eight teams in the WTA Finals.
The Double Fault Percentage is calculated based on the total number of double faults divided by the total number of second serves hit.
We can see that the players have a more difficult time serving in the ad court on both first and second serves.
Point of the Week
Your first serve percentage is one of the easiest metrics to measure and improve. You can chart it yourself and adjust accordingly.
In singles, you’d like to see that number around 60%. If it’s too high, you may not win a very high percentage of those points.
In doubles, you want the percentage higher, around 65-70%. You don’t need to force as many return errors in doubles since your partner at the net is there to help.
