Stat of the Week | February 16, 2022

Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

Stat of the Week: 25%

The return of serve may be the most impactful shot in our sport. After all, the best players in the game, Nadal, Djokovic, Medvedev, etc., are also the best returners in the game.

Each return has 3 possible outcomes: In play, winner, or error.

Based on our data from 2021 ATP matches:

  • 1 in every 4 returns is an error (25%)
  • There are 16x more errors than winners
  • 3x more errors occur returning 1st serves compared to 2nd serves

2021 ATP All Returns

Point of the Week

The greatest proportion of errors in matches happens on the return of serve, especially on the ATP tour where the serve is such a dominant stroke. As pointed out in earlier stats, it is ironic then that the return of serve remains one of the most under-practiced shots in the game.

Compare your return stats to the best in the world with a player package.
