Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
Stat of the Week: 3%
Like the men, the top WTA players miss approximately one in every four returns, the highest percentage of errors in any segment of a match. Top women players hit more return winners than the men – 3% vs 1% for the men.
- 8 return errors for each winner
- 2.4x more winners occur returning 2nd serves compared to 1st serves
- Players are 20% more likely to commit an error returning against 1st serves vs 2nd serves
Point of the Week
In the women’s game, even at the top of the game, the 2nd serve is a liability, meaning that the returner has the upper hand. Use this information in your own game, by developing an attacking style when returning 2nd serves, rather than being satisfied with just getting the ball back in play.
Our filters allow you to easily sort and create a “return of serve playlist” (along with stats). So you can watch all the points where you hit a forehand return in the deuce court, for example. This allows you to hone in on technical flaws and patterns more easily.
