Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
Stat of the Week: Dejavu – 68%
Last week, we looked at the exact rally lengths from the B12 division at the 2021 Jr. Orange Bowl, which was played on clay. This week we look at the G12 division, which is played on hard courts.
Once again, despite the surface (and gender) difference, we see that 68% of all rallies end with six strokes.
- More than two-thirds of all rallies are done within 6 strokes.
- The dominant rally length is once again 2. This is a serve followed by either a return winner or error.
- If we break down the 5 to 8 range, most of these (61%) end on the 5th or 6th stroke. For the B12, this was 63%.
- Only 9% of all rallies are longer than 12 shots (8% for boys).
Point of the Week
Matchplay is the “exam” we take.
Prepare for the exam by making sure you cover what matters. After getting through the customary rallies cross court, consistency work, and drilling, make sure that you simulate match play by playing competitive points where a serve and return are involved.
The serve and return are definitely on the exam.
