Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
Stat of the Week: 2%
Two weeks ago we looked at differences in first serve numbers between hard and clay. Heading into Wimbledon, we’ll take a look at these same numbers on the grass.
For both men and women, the first serve on grass is even more of a weapon than it is on hard or clay courts. Both first serve win percentage and ace percentage are about 2% higher than they are on hard courts.
Point of the Week
Efficient use of the 6 kinetic links is a key to developing the first serve as a weapon.
Starting from the ground up, each link “catapults” the next link, culminating in maximum racket head speed at point of contact. Rather than jumping and hitting, the server is “pulled” off the ground as a result of correct use of the links.
The first two links (feet to knee, knee to hips) require plyometric or explosive movement. These help add MPH to your serve.
