Stat of the Week | June 23, 2021

Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

Stat of the Week: 5%

While there is no argument that the shorter rally lengths dominate all surfaces, the 1 to 4 range is even more of a factor on grass.

  • For both men and women, the 1 to 4 rally length is 5% higher than it is on hard courts.
  • From 5 shots on comparative rally lengths are highest on clay and lowest on grass.

Point of the Week

The fact is that the dominant rally length in tennis (at all levels) is the 1 to 4 range.

This stresses the importance of each player’s first two shots:

  • The serve and serve+1
  • The return and return+1

The practice court needs to be planned accordingly. In no way does this mean that you should not work on consistency and developing the confidence to stay in long rallies. But not at the expense of the serve, return, and +1’s.
