Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
Stat of the Week: 20%
Like the boys, the rally lengths of five and six account for 20% of all rallies.
This is far more insightful than lumping these two shots in with the 7th and 8th shot like we often see – 5 to 8 rallies. Both of these shots are the third hit by each player.
- 5 shot rallies end with a serve+2
- 6 shot rallies end with a return+2
Over 70% of all points played end before either player hits a 4th ball.

Point of the Week
We have always said that players need to be really good at their first two touches.
While this is true, we might revise this and say “be really good at your first two touches after the serve/return.”
Next week, we will take a look at the exact rally counts and see if the serve has any “trickle down” effect on the serve+1 and serve+2.
Quote of the Week
“Tennis is bound by the laws of physics. Not by any coach’s unique theory or opinion.”
