Stat of the Week | November 24, 2021

Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

November is Doubles Month! Each week, we have been bringing you brand new doubles data.

Stat of the Week: 70.9%

Last week we determined that the T-serve is not necessarily the best serve for doubles by looking at first serve data from the top 8 WTA doubles teams.

Today we’ll take a look at second serves.

2nd Serve Data for All 8 WAT Finals Doubles Teams

The first thing that jumps out is the difference between the deuce and ad court. If you’re the return team and get to choose deuce or ad on a deciding point, you probably want to choose ad.

Again, on both sides, the wide serves had the highest win percentage.

  • In the deuce court, the wide serve is hit the least but is the most effective.
  • In the ad court, the T-serve is used the least and is the least effective.

Point of the Week

Again, we see that the players aren’t using their most effective serves most often.

In the deuce court, the difference between the wide and T-serve is only 2.3%. This can’t be detected by “feel” or just watching the match. You must get the data to know.

This illustrates the importance of measuring effectiveness with each strategy. At Tennis Analytics, we often find players who are surprised by their serve data. After they begin improving their strategy, they start winning more matches.

If you want your serve data, purchase a player package.
