Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

Stat of the Week: 60%

Double faults are not all bad.

  • On average, on the WTA tour, one in every seven second serves is a doubles fault.
  • On the men’s side, it is closer to one in ten.

When balanced with the “serve points won” metric, a healthy double fault number indicates that the server is using the second serve stroke aggressively.

At the 2019-20 US Open, 60% of all doubles faults were hit long or wide for the women. On the men’s side, that number was 55%.

Point of the Week

Top ATP players are the only category of tennis player where the second serve is not a liability. Even the top of the WTA tour lose more points than they win on second serve.

When considering your second serve, focusing on depth is important. A second serve that lands short in the box is much easier to attack.

Track your second serve performance by recording a match and buying a player package to get game-changing serve data.
