Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.

Largely due to the lesser strength of serve (compared to boys), there were a few more return winners (2% for girls vs 1% for boys).  Still, the largest contribution to overall errors at any stroke count, occurred on the return (10.5 errors to each winner).

Improving your return (or any other stroke) efficiently requires a mix of specific and random training.

Phase 1 – Specific
 (block) training:

🎾
Have the server hit one type of serve at a specific target so that you can groove your technique, work on consistency and placement

Phase 2 – Random
 training

🎾
Point, game situation training.  Server mixes up paces, spins and targets, switching between deuce/ad sides to simulate match tempo.

For both phases, keep a record of your success so that you can measure improvement.
