For the month of October we will look at data from the junior event at the 2022 US Open. For this we have looked at a total of 14,986 points (Boys – 7,337, Girls – 7,649)
As with the top pros, the single largest contribution to errors by individual stroke count happens on the 2nd shot, the return of serve. Return errors outnumber winners 22:1.
š¾1st Return: Get the ball back, ideally deep to middle of court (reactive mode). Expect the server to still have an advantage on their 2nd shot.
š¾2nd Return: Get the ball back, but look to attack by either being more aggressive and/or following into the net (proactive mode). Once you make the 2nd return, you have leveled the odds of winning the point.
Devote the appropriate amount of time on the practice court to the return of serve.
