Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
In December, we will look at junior data from the 2018 and 2019 Junior Orange Bowl, featuring some of the world’s top young players.
Stat of the Week: 34%
At the girls under 12’s and 14’s level, one out of every three (34%) 2nd serve points lost is due to a double fault.
Of all 2nd serves hit for this group of players, nearly one in five is a double fault. The average is 19%, but the difference between the winners and losers is 6%.
- Match winners double fault on 16% of 2nd serves.
- Match losers double fault on 22% of 2nd serves.
See the graph below for more girls 12’s & 14’s serve data.

Point of the Week
Double faults are not all bad.
The important number, which we will look at next week, is the 1st and 2nd serve win percentage.
Would you rather have a high 2nd serve percentage OR a high 2nd serve win percentage?
- You make 100% of 2nd serves and lose every point = 0% 2nd serve points won.
- You make 50% of 2nd serves and win 100% of those points = 50% 2nd serve points won.
I’ll take the latter option.
How many double faults do you serve per match? What is your 1st & 2nd serve win percentage?
