Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
In December, we are looking at junior data from the 2018 and 2019 Junior Orange Bowl, featuring some of the world’s top young players.
Stat of the Week: 14%
One of the key determinants to winning a match is 1st serve win percentage.
This number is supported by getting a high percentage (target 65%+) of 1st serves in play.
- At the B14 level, the gap between match winner and loser is 14%.
- At the B12 level, the gap is 11%.
The 2nd serve is a liability for the server at every level of tennis except for top ATP players. So, the 1st serve is important!
Point of the Week
Monitor your serve.
Keeping track of your serve performance is actually quite easy. Have someone “chart” every serve you hit by creating a table like the one below.
1st Serve | 2nd Serve | |
In Play | ||
Ace | ||
Double Fault | ||
Point Won |
After you create the chart, here’s how to use it.
- Mark once in the top 3 rows for a 1st or 2nd serve.
- Mark row 4 if the player won the point.
So you’ll have a maximum of 2 marks per point. At the end, simply tally up the totals to find some excellent serve data and compare it to the Tennis Analytics data.
