At the girls under 12’s and 14’s level, the match winner is noticeably better than the loser on both 1st and 2nd serves.
The difference in win percentage is 14%!
In fact, the match winners’ 2nd serves are more effective than the losers’ 1st serves.
The actual 1st serve percentage is similar for both match winners and losers.
- Girls 12’s: Winner makes 64% of 1st serves. Loser makes 62%.
- Girls 14’s: Winner makes 63% of 1st serves. Loser makes 59%.

The 12’s and 14’s are a key period in player development for juniors.
The importance of the serve as a determinant of winning and losing is indisputable. Players and coaches should be investing a significant part of practices to ensure that technical elements are not overlooked.
