Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
Stat of the Week: 84%
Ash Barty solidified her claim as best player on the WTA tour last weekend at the 2022 Australian Open. The World #1 did so in emphatic fashion, not dropping a single set the entire event!
From the quarterfinals through the finals, Barty won 84% of her first serve points and 52% of second serve points.
Once the ball was in play, she played aggressively, hitting double the number of winners compared to her opponents. She also kept her error count to the same level as her opponents.
Point of the Week
Ash Barty’s serve placement stayed pretty consistent for all opponents. Like Ash, great players have two things in common:
- They know their own strengths (and weaknesses).
- They play to their strengths before playing to their opponent’s weakness.
The first step in understanding your own game is to build a data set. Especially when using competitive match data, numbers don’t lie. Use your current strengths to plan your next match strategy, and your weaknesses to plan the practice court.

Good morning Mate, if I send you matchplay video from tournaments of my students can you plug in the numbers for me to give a chalk talk to my athlete?
I love these stats my friend, I should of gotten a job with you and Craig, would love to learn how to get in the business for the ATP/WTA tour for sure.
