Stat of the Week: 82%
Ashleigh Barty is through to the semifinals of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
What makes the top seed so dangerous on grass?
For the last 2 years, Barty has won a remarkable 82% of first serve points. While her first serve percentage seems low at 57%, the combination is deadly!
In fact, if you do the math, this combination is better than getting 65% of first serves in and winning 70%, which are very good numbers.
- 57 x 0.82 = 46.74
- 65 x 0.70 = 45.5
This places tremendous pressure not only on opponents’ returns, but also on their own serves. They have to keep up with this winning combination, which is not easy.
The graph below shows Ash vs her opponents on grass.
Point of the Week
For most people, if they have a weak serve, they’ll say something like… my serve is so bad! ☹️
Try being more specific. There are four areas where your serve can be weak.
- First serve percentage – you don’t make enough first serves.
- First serve win percentage – you don’t win enough points when you do make a first serve.
- Second serve win percentage – you don’t win enough points on your second serve.
- Second serve percentage – you double fault too much.
