Stat of the Week: 15%
More rallies of 13+ strokes were played at the Australian Open in 2021 than at any of the other majors for the ATP Tour. At all majors, the shorter rallies (1-8 shots) dominated at over 85%.
Rallies of nine or more shots account for under 15% of all points played. On the slowest surface – the red clay at Roland Garros – 9+ rallies account for just 14% of all points.
This data is from 42,875 points from the four majors in 2021.

On the women’s side, rally length’s at all four majors are very similar. On average, 88% of all points end within 8 shots, with just 12% more than 9 shots.
This is data from over 29,000 points during the 2021 majors.

Point of the Week
Despite differences in the speed of the surface, some universal truths hold true in the sport. Around 85% of all points are over within 8 shots. The long rallies make the highlight reels though.
