Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
Stat of the Week: 85%
Just as we saw on the men’s side (see last week’s stat), most rallies at the 2022 French Open were short for the WTA. 85% of all rallies were less than 8 shots.
This data is gathered from almost 6,000 points played at this year’s WTA tournament (ATP – 14,395).
While the longer rallies (9+) were similar for both tours, the rallies under 4 shots were 3% lower for the women compared to men. These were then “absorbed” by the 5 to 8 range where the WTA had more points.
The logical explanation for this difference is probably due to the relative strength of serves between the two groups – the more powerful the serve, the shorter the rally.
Overall, there were 2.5 errors hit for every winner.
