Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
Stat of the Week: 75%
All points end in either a winner or error for one of the players, unless, of course, you get a point penalty. At all levels, even the best players make 3 times as many errors as winners. That is, 75% of points end in error.
- Winners = aces + return winners + rally winners (3+)
- Errors = doubles faults + return errors + rally errors (3+)
- The majority of errors occur before both players have touched the ball twice (within 1st four shots).
- Most winners happen from the 5th shot and after.

Point of the Week
Because you are more likely to make an error than hit a winner, great strategy is built around forcing your opponents to make an error rather than hitting more winners.
Instead of focusing on “not missing”, great players focus on “making the opponent miss.”
Find out which areas of your game are yielding the most errors, then work on those in practice. Purchase a player package to get data on your matches.

Great question Chris… I’ll see if we can get this in a stat soon because I’m not positive.
