Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
Stat of the Week: 50%+
Last week, we found that on average, at the junior level for girls, both the winner and loser of the match wins over 50% of their net points. In fact, at all ages, players win the majority of net appearances, even if they lose the match.

Getting to the net is even more important for the guys. Also, as players get older, getting to the net becomes an even better strategy.
Point of the Week
Nothing beats the “trial by fire” method of trying to get to the net in a match. Unlike lessons, where the coach is giving “canned” short balls and you have the opportunity to hit textbook volleys, in matchplay your opponent is trying to pass you, hit it at your feet or even at your head!
These are the real volleys that you need to master. To get better at the net in matches, start going to the net more… in matches!
To find your own win percentage at net vs your opponents, order a player package and we’ll reveal that data and more.

The chip and charge is one strategy to get to the net. The Federer backhand slice is not a bad place to start.
