Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
This month, we have looked at the WTA Top 4 – Barty, Halep, Osaka, and Kenin. What are the key match stats that separate them from the rest of the pack?
Findings are based on matches tagged by Tennis Analytics from 2018 to 2020.
Stat of the Week: 60%
While all points are important, break points are more important. You can win or lose a match depending on your performance during break points.
We measure these as break points saved (serving), and break points converted (returning).
Arguably the greatest “pressure point” is being a game point down when serving. This is where GREAT players can separate themselves from the pack.
The WTA top 4 win an average of 60% of all serve points when confronted from break point down (0-40, 15-40, 30-40, Ad Out).

Point of the Week
Other than break points, the other “pressure points” for the server, are defined as being ONE point away from a break point – 0-30, 15-30, 30-30, Deuce.
That next point is a biggie!
At Tennis Analytics, we measure all our players’ performance on pressure points to see where they can improve.
Players can adopt one of two mindsets on these pressure points.
- Play to Win
- Play Not To Lose
