Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
November is Doubles Month! Each week, we’ll bring you brand new doubles data.
Stat of the Week: 6.3%
We charted over 1,400 points from NTRP 3.5 and 4.0 doubles matches.
Which return stroke do these club-level players favor?

These players hit a winner off the backhand wing at nearly a 3x rate, and they committed fewer errors as well.
Looks like “serve to the backhand” might be bad advice at this level.
Point of the Week
Groundstrokes and returns are not the same thing.
For many players, their forehand groundstroke might be a strength, but their forehand return might be a weakness. More on that next week.
This illustrates the importance of using data to come up with your strategies. Often, the information we find isn’t what we’ve been taught.
Purchase a player package to measure your own return stats.

Very interesting. How exactly do you get access to 1400 points in order to compile this kind of data? I’m assuming it is from video but where is this type of video available for lower levels?

Hi Chris, we ran doubles workshops at clubs and filmed the matches 🙂
