Every week, Tennis Analytics dives deep into the data, bringing you a stat of the week to help you understand tennis better and become a little smarter.
Stat of the Week: 5%
Carlos Alcaraz is the new King of Tennis, vanquishing his opponents at the 2022 US Open.
He played 275 games in total and won 160 (58%) of these. And rather than winning in traditional fashion, by making fewer errors than opponents, he won by hitting more winners (5%).
Alcaraz’s weapon was his serve. Over the fortnight, he put 68% first serves in play, and then won a remarkable 69% of these. Even more remarkable – he won 56% of all second serve points.
Point of the Week
If you have followed these articles over the last couple of years, one thing is quite clear… the player with the stronger serve wins the match.
But serve strength is directly related to the quality of the return game. Good serving forces poor returning, and vice versa.
Knowing your stats on your first touch is a gauge of your overall game strength.
